The Insanity of Creation
Today's Verse
You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me! O God, if only you would destroy the wicked! Get out of my life, you murderers! They blaspheme you; your enemies misuse your name. O LORD, shouldn’t I hate those who hate you? Shouldn’t I despise those who oppose you? Yes, I hate them with total hatred, for your enemies are my enemies. Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.Psalm 139:13-24 · NLT
The Devotion
Did you know your body has approximately 60,000 miles of blood vessels? If they were laid end-to-end, they would wrap around the earth two-and-a-half times.
How about the 30 trillion cells in your body? Each diploid cell has DNA inside of it that is coiled up and compressed to fit a space of 6 micrometers. If the DNA in just one cell in your body were stretched out, it would be about six-and-a-half feet long. If you stretched out every DNA piece in your body, the total length would be about 34-40 trillion miles. That's enough to go to the sun and back 200 times or go to Pluto and back 5 times (is Pluto even a planet? I can't keep up).
Before scientists ever discovered these amazing facts, the Holy Spirit inspired David to write down the facts. David praised and thanked God for making Him "so wonderfully complex." He writes that God knew you before you were born (before your mother even knew she was pregnant!). Life is precious. From womb to tomb, our lives are a gift from God.
The world tells people that creation happened by chance. How could DNA possibly be so complex by accident? How could the earth be just far away enough from the sun to freeze, or just close enough not to burn up? I've seen time and time again that when people are told they are accidents, they are driven to despair and hopelessness. Still others deny the Creator and live only for making themselves happy.
Jesus gives us a better way. He gives us the only way. David prayed for wickedness to be judged. One day, all the evil in the world will be judged. But then, at the end of this masterpiece Psalm, David prays the most amazing prayer to the God who sees us, and the God who created us. Will you pray this same prayer honestly before God today?
"Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
Point out anything in me that offends you,
and lead me along the path of everlasting life."
Lord, thank you for making me so intentionally. Thank you for knowing me so intimately. Thank you that I can cast all my cares and release all my worries to You, because You care about me. Help me trade trying for trusting today. Help me open up to You. Search my heart today. If there is any evil or anything against You, please help me get rid of it. Then, forgive me by the blood of Jesus, and help me walk the path of everlasting life. In Jesus' name. Amen.
