What would you do on your last day?
Today's Verse
42So Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their superiors exercise authority over them.43But it shall not be this way among you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,44and whoever wants to be first must be the slave of all.45For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”Mark 10:42–45 · BSB
The Devotion
Here's a quote that'll stop you dead in your tracks.
“Our greatest fear should not be of failure but of succeeding at things in life that don’t really matter.” Francis Chan
What would you do if you knew you had only one more day to live? There once was a great theologian named Tim McGraw who told us exactly what he’d do: skydiving, Rocky Mountain climbing, and going 2.7 seconds on a bull named Fumanchu!
If I knew it was my last day, I suppose I would spend time with my wife and kids, take a dip in my hot tub one last time, and get my favorite Blizzard from Dairy Queen (Medium Royal Deluxe New York Cheesecake with fudge – don’t knock it until you try it).
Truth is, none of us knows when our last day to live will be. But Jesus knew exactly when his last day would be.
Guess what he did?
He washed feet.
Jesus was the greatest person in human history (so great we measure the chronology of the world by his life: BC and AD).
Jesus’ words inspire us to ask: How can we find greatness through service? What does serving others look like?
If it’s done in Jesus’ name with a grateful heart, it’s full of significance. We never are more like Jesus than when we serve.
Lord, help me live like you died yesterday, rose from the dead today, and you're coming back tomorrow. Help me serve other people, love out loud (with action and intentionality), and share the Gospel wherever I go today. In Jesus' name, Amen.
