The God Who Sees
Today's Verse
O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. You see me when I travel and when I rest at home. You know everything I do. You know what I am going to say even before I say it, Lord. You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand! I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! The Devotion
Did you know the first name of God in the Bible used by a human is El Roi, which means "The God Who Sees Me"? In Genesis 16 and 21, the Bible tells us the story of Hagar, a young Egyptian woman who was a slave to a much older husband and wife named Abraham and Sarah. Long story short, God promised Abraham that He would give Abraham and Sarah a child in their old age (Genesis 12). Ten years went by, and Abraham and Sarah were still childless. So, Sarah took things into her own hands and told Abraham to have a child with her slave, Hagar. Even though she made the plan, she ended up regretting it and becoming bitter and jealous because Hagar was pregnant and she wasn't. She mistreated her so much that Hagar ran away into the wilderness. She ended up sitting down by a spring of water, desparate... having nowhere to go, no one to provide for her, and no way to take care of the baby in her womb.
There, in the wilderness, God met her. Genesis 16:13-14 says, "Thereafter, Hagar used another name to refer to the LORD, who had spoken to her. She said, “You are the God who sees me.” She also said, “Have I truly seen the One who sees me?” So that well was named Beer-lahai-roi (which means “well of the Living One who sees me”).
In Psalm 139, David describes the same God, El Roi - the God who sees me- hundreds of years after Hagar. This same amazing God sees YOU today - personally, completely, intimately, and powerfully. There's nowhere you can go where He cannot find you. Maybe you feel like Hagar, stuck in the wilderness, with a lot of questions without answers, and have no clue what to do next. Trust in God today, the God Who Sees You, and take each step honoring Him. He will direct your path as you follow Jesus (Proverbs 3:5-6).
Lord, thank you that you are omniscient; you are all-seeing and all-knowing. Thank you that You are Omnipresent. There's nothing in my mind, my life, my emotions, or relationships that is unknown to You. Since you can see what I can't see, I choose to trust You today. Help me know the path ahead for whatever decisions I make today, and help me make choices and actions that honor You. In Jesus' name. Amen.
